Treasure of Humility
Matthew 6:1-11
Introduction: The chapter sheds light on the importance of sincerity and humility in one’s relationship with God, as well as the needs to trust in God’s provision and care. focuses on the proper ways to perform acts of righteousness, specifically almsgiving, prayer, and fasting, it emphasizes that these actions should be done with sincere hearts and directed towards God, not for the praise or recognition of others. This outline will provide a verse by verse and study of Matthew 6:1-11, seeking to reveal the treasures contained within its teachings.
- Humility giving to the needy (verses 1-4):
Jesus warns against practicing and performing righteousness acts to show front of others to seen and praised by them. When giving to the needy, He encourage doing so secret, will reward openly. Jesus emphasizing to give to the needy in secret, which acts of charity should not done for public recognition. It shows for “charitable giving” is the most importance of mercy and compassion. The act of giving should do with pure heart, not for the approval of other but for the approval of God.
- Righteousness and Avoid Hypocrisy: Jesus warns against practicing righteousness before others to see by them and giving with the intent to see by others, emphasizing that such actions have already received their reward in the form of human praise. He also emphasizes acts of charity and prays contrasting it with hypocrisy of seeking human approval. Look Proverbs 19:17
- Secret Giving: The focus should be on giving in secret, so that only God sees the act of giving, and He will reward those who give with sincerity.
- Humility In Prayer (verse 5-8):
When we recognize our heart need for Him, we align ourselves with God’s heart without being hypocrisy. Jesus again condemns the hypocritical practice of praying publicly for the purpose of being see by others:
- He instructs believers to retreat to a private place and pray to their Father in secret, read vs. 6.
- He further advises against using “vain repetitions” in prayer, emphasizing that God already knows their needs before they ask. Prayer with understanding which God knows what you need before you ask.
- Avoid Public Displays: Similar giving, Jesus warns against in public to see by others, as this also results in receiving human praise instead of divine reward.
- Private Prayer/Focus on God: Jesus encourages believers to pray in private, entering their “closet” (or small private place) where they can speak to God without seeking the approval of others. The emphasis is on a personal, intimate relationship with God, where prayer is conversation with the Father, not a performance for others. It involves being mindful of God’s presence and seeking to live a life that honor him. Please focus on God.
- Humility In the Lord’s Prayer: (verse 9-11)
Jesus provides a model for prayer, commonly known as the Lord’s Prayer. The prayer begins with reverence for God and a desire for His will to be done on earth as in Heaven. It then transitions to request for a daily provision: “Give us this day our daily bread.” We recognize our need for Him; we align ourselves with God’s heart. A humble prayer acknowledges God’s greatness while inviting His presence in our lives. We pray humble, seeking His guidance rather than our understanding, we open ourselves up to receiving God’s wisdom. Let us practice daily humility in our prayer lives and grow in our faith. Jesus teaches about the right attitudes and approach in prayer. Look at Psalm 86:1
- Lesson From Model Prayer: Jesus provides the Lord’s prayer as a model for prayer, emphasizing submission God’s will, provision, forgiveness, and guidance.
- Prepare:
- Pure heart and motive (Matthew 6:5-8)
- Private conversation intent on invoking His presence (Matthew 6:6)
- Meaningful communication (Matthew 6:7,8; Luke 18:1-8)
- Presentation of specific requests (Matthew 6:9-11; see I Samuel 12:23,24)
- Humility Before Others: Being humble before others is an essential step in building strong, meaningful relationships. We sometime feel tempted to promote ourselves or boast, but the Bible encourages us instead to lifted others up. Let us remember that humility brings people together, creating unity within our communities. Let us focus reflect God love and grace within our relationship. Look in Ephesians 4:2; James 4:6.

- Seek God’s approval: The focus should be on seeking approval from the Father in heaven, who sees in secret and rewards genuine devotion.

Together, we can walk this beautiful path of humility, growing closer to God and enriching our relationship. The ‘treasure of humility” in Proverbs 22:4 is a promise of riches, honor, and life for those who cultivate and humble and God-fearing heart. It encourages individuals to seek humility not just a virtue but as a path to tangible and lasting blessing.
